We arrived early but not early enough. The racetrack opens promptly at 7:00am, and despite being an hour from downtown Denver, its important to get there as early as caffine will allow you to. The sun and heat can become very  intense in the afternoon lapping sessions, and without question, your best driving will happen before noon.

John Conner, a track rat and collector of B5 S4’s ( 2 ) swaps out his wheels and tires for his track set up; BBS CH’s with Dunlop R Compound rubber.

At the track power is important, but ultimately tires, brakes and suspension are everyone’s limiting factor. John brings his track wheels in his S4 sedan, and swaps them out trackside , along with a high temperature racing brake pad set for his Stop Tech 332mm big brake kit.

Drivers meetings are an important component in any successful lapping day. Here Glenn is announcing that for this particular day there would be two lapping groups : fast, and really really fast. Each group  taking 30 minute sessions. This structure is essential in ensuring that people get the most out of their time on the track.

A stage 1 B8 A4, stage 2 supercharged B7 S4, and stage 3 B5 S4 patiently wait for  their first laps.

In between run groups we retreat to the retaining wall and watch  the action.

KEEP RIGHT ! Despite wearing street tires, Charlie Collings made his HPR debut in his supercharged S4. The induction noise from the PES supercharger could be heard from nearly anywhere on the track.

No speeding tickets out here !

Back in the pits Aaron Marshall checks tire temperature  across the tread on Geoffery’s 2007 RS4. During the course of the day, we help our customers understand how and why to monitor tire pressure and temperature. A few psi make a big difference when driving at the limit.

As John Conner  accelerates into turn one he ponders how many more track days he will attend on stock suspension. ( Correct answer = NONE!)

Geoffrey Thomas (G) smirks behind the wheel in his RS4. No stranger to performance driving G has grown up road racing motorcycles. This was his first day on the track with his car and according to his permagrin he more than enjoyed himself.

While on  street tires ( 255mm Michelin Pilot Sport PS2’s)  we noted that the RS4 became faster as the tires heated up. We measured lap times on the RS4’s instrument cluster ( COOL !)  and found that as the car became increasing loose ( loose definition see ‘Days of Thunder’) lap times actually improved allowing G to drive the car more and slide it car predictably around corners.

Aaron Marshall muscles his way around turns 5 and 6.  Like a bull in a china shop, Aaron gets his S4 to where its going like no other driver on the track. Riding with Aaron is a special treat. So special in fact that I will never, ever, ever, do it again. ( Just kidding, kind of..)

In all seriousness, Aaron is a very talented driver. His driving skill proves to be a useful teaching tool. As he  can easily demonstrate to customers the limits of their car, and how to take their performance to the next level.

Everyone in the grandstands enjoyed watching Aaron playing his new favorite game :  ’Pass-the-yellow-Z06-Corvettes-as-if-they-were-standing still’.

20PSI at 110MPH, uphill !

The racetrack affords us the opportunity to get out and exercise these cars to the fullest extent. Many first time drivers are shocked at what it really feels like to drive their performance machines flat out.

Many drivers experience a sense of meditative peace while driving in this way. When pushing the car to the limit, all you think about is this instance, this corner, this braking zone. Email, work, the BP oil spill, simply do not exist in these moments.

Sean Thul refuses to listen. We keep telling him that his race prepped  944 only makes 115HP, yet he still manages to carry as much speed as anyone else thru the twisting corners at HPR. Looks like his days of duking it out in the NASA Spec racing series are really paying off.

A question frequently asked at every track event is : ‘… if you could own any of the cars out here, what would it be ?’.

On this particular day, I replied confidently ‘GT3RS, no question,’.

This is why I buy lottery tickets.

With a Porsche club event happening the following day at HPR, the Porsche’s were everywhere.

These enthusiasts travel well.

Just can’t get enough of the GT3RS.

Part of the fun of these  lapping days is that you never know who you are going to run into out here. While Jeff Gordon was no where in sight, this twenty-four car is rumored to be a Hendrick Motorsports-built spare car for the Gordon racing team.  Pretty incredible watching this thing make turns next to anything else out there.

While we respect this approach to safety, and  love the racing gear, you will find us wearing shorts and t shirts.

In 27 days, a 2008 Volkswagen GTI was : purchased, stripped, completely rebuilt, track tested, vinyl wrapped and transported to Mosport International Raceway in Ontario Canada, where Robb Holland drove his way into two top five finishes, including one podium finish, in the debut weekend of the 3ZERO3 Motorsports VW GTI SCCA  Pro Racing World Challenge Touring Car Championship.

27 days = 648 hours, and we used them all.

What is the SCCA World Challenge ?

The  SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championship was created to provide teams, manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers a competitive production-based race series in which to prove their products. Basically cars built with similar chassis lay outs, power and weight specifications are track prepped, and built to do battle  in wheel-to-wheel combat over the course of a designated road racing schedule. Pretty cool stuff.

When longtime friend and professional race car driver Robb Holland approached us to be the title sponsor for his 2008 VW GTI World Challenge Touring Car, we jumped at the chance. When Robb told us when the car needed to be built. We laughed. Then we cried. Then we picked up the phone and got to work.

Using every last second of the 27 days afforded, this race car was built, tested, and run through the gauntlet last weekend in its inaugural debut. Not only was this car competitive, Robb set the track record at Mosport International Speedway on Sunday’s race, turning the fastest lap ever recorded in class history at this track.

Damn.

Tear down begins.

Before we even had the keys to Robb’s freshly purchased 2008 VW GTI the car was transported              ( thank you Pearl + Matt !)  to 3ZERO3 Motorsports where a team of technicians literally disassembled a brand new vehicle. Leaving no bolt undisturbed, this car went from street legal, to ‘what happened’ in an afternoon.

Done & Done.

The 3R build.

After the vehicle was torn down, it was then transported to 3R. Whereby  3ZERO3 technicians Andrews and Tucker assisted the  trusty team of trained  technicians and  began building the GTI from the ground up. 3R is a company dedicated to building race cars such as these.  From NASA racing to SCCA, and everything in between, 3R has spent years perfecting their craft, and it shows ! The guys at 3R truly  are what brought all of the pieces together. Also they have some of the coolest fabrication and testing equipment we have every laid eyes on ( shock dyno anyone ?).

Hurry up and test !

With no time to spare the GTI was transported  ( thank you Sean !) to High Plains Raceway for track testing.

Most race teams will spend weeks at the track. Sorting out suspension and alignment settings, weight distribution, and the like. We had a matter of hours, not weeks.

Rappin on the Wrap.

Our GTI was not painted, the graphics that you see here on the car is a vinyl wrap. An amazing alternative to paint, vinyl wrap is essentially a large format vinyl sticker that can be custom designed and then applied to any vehicle.

So cool !

Our car would not have looked as sexy as it currently does without the help of Mike Hornbeck and his Soapoint Graphics team. Not only did Mike work with us to design the best looking car in our class, he personally worked thru the night the day before the GTI was put on the trailer and taken to Mosport.  If you have any vinyl wrap needs, or are curious to learn more about this custom and cost effective solution, contact Mike. Before we knew it the car was on a trailer, ( thank you Alex !) and driven thru the night to Ontario, Canada, and testing had begun.

Weather threatened to downpour all weekend, but the clouds yielded little precipitation. Testing went well on Friday, and for Saturdays first race we qualified 6th and finished 5th.

To many outside the build, a 5th place finish doesn’t seem that impressive. We, on the contrary were thrilled. In a fraction of the time our competition had to build, test, and tune, we were able to build a car capable of running at the front of the pack.  Success indeed.

Bring on the glory ! Robb conveying feats of strength and heroism to Canadian TV reporters.

Sundays race was spectacular. Our GTI was battling the Irish Mike’s VW Jetta literally all day long. By the end of the race the crowd in turn 5 were on their feet, offering a standing ovation to the closest battle of the day.

Like all of the Volkswagens competing in this series, our GTI was under-braked, under-powered, and over weight, nevertheless Robb managed to set the track record and fastest lap of the day for the Touring Car class. Stunning!

Putting this car together in 27 days, and setting a track record at Mosport is something that both Robb Holland and 3ZERO3 Motorsports will remember forever. A truly remarkable accomplishment. We couldn’t have done it with out Robb’s persistent dedication and effort, along with those of our technicians Andrews and Tucker, not to mention the world class build led at 3R.

The build would not have been possible without the generosity of Emich, VW,  BSH Speedshop, Autotech, BBS, Stoptech, and APR.

The car would not have looked as sexy as it does, without the efforts of Mike Hornbeck and the Soapoint Graphics team who worked thru the night ( literally ) to get the vinyl wrap completed the night before the car was trailered to Canada.

To be honest, we can be a little skeptical of car shows, and did not have high hopes for our first experience as a supporting sponsor of the 16th Annual VW on the Green car show.

Boy were we wrong.

Jeffery Price and his team are really to be commended for the show they put together. This was a very well organized,  and very well attended car show. The layout, sponsors, and most importantly the cars in attendance were all worthy of time and attention.

Some of the show highlights for us :

• Jaw dropping air cooled cars. Our favorites were the frame scraping customs provided by Kustom Coach Werks.
• Surf culture.
• Unique and tastefully modified water cooled cars that honor the tradition of the early air cooled cars
• A charming announcer who despite getting everyone’s name wrong, managed to offend no one.

I hope the DATR guys were paying attention, you got some work to do if you want to best this show !

VW shows rewards the curious eye. This Golf wasn’t a show winner by any means. But the howling Rabbit  skateboard concept proved to be well executed and made this  otherwise forgettable car more than memorable.

The Westies were all fantastic. Who wouldn’t  love to spend summer traveling the high country in one of these rolling 4WD studio apartments!

Kustom Coach Werks had some amazing rides at the show. This turbo’d Karmann was exceptional.

A seriously built Baja racer. With a roll cage, like this, I’d think twice before I accepted a ride in this mental dirt racing machine. At least there are headphones.

There is alot of hardware packed inside of Zeke Peterson’s award winning Beetle Turbo S engine bay.

Zeke made some major upgrades to a car that was already a class leader last show season. The addition of lighweight OZ wheels, Bilstein coilovers, and Stoptech brakes will be a big bonus not only on the show circuit, but much needed improvements as Zeke attacks the road racing schedule this summer.

These Beetle dragsters were are seriously boosted.

These showroom quality restorations may not be as flashy as the dragsters, and Karman’s parked on their frames. But there was just as much TLC in these classics as anything else at the show.

The 16th annual Volkswagens on the Green car show was one for the ages. If you haven’t been to this show, you really ought to put it on the calendar for next summer. We can be awfully critical of car shows, but this event was well attended, well organized , and really alot of fun. Many thanks to all of those that participated in the event. Including:

• FRIDAY : Meet us friday morning at 3ZERO3, as we all meet up and get prepared for the drive down Highway 285, with a scheduled stop in Buena Vista for lunch. Then over Independence pass and into Snowmass where you will get checked into your hotel, and have time to relax before our dinner at Buchi Sushi.
• SATURDAY : This isn’t a working weekend, yes you will be able to sleep in, and then meet everyone at 10:00am for a multimedia motorsports seminar in the Silvertree Hotel. Class will be in session until lunch time. We will grab a quick bite and head to Woody Creek Raceway where we will hang out at track while a few dozen Lamborghini’s and other exclusive exotics hot lap for the afternoon session. People will be given the opportunity to sign up, and ride shotgun in a Lamborghini with pro-driver Robb Holland….. details to follow. After the track, we will head back to the hotel where you will be able to put your feet up for a few, then get shined up and ready for the evening festivities. • SUNDAY : Wake up  at a reasonable hour, we will have a brief weekend wrap up, then a drive back home. For those of you looking to maximize the scenery we will take the back roads to Denver. However feel free to shoot onto I-70 for a quicker ride home.

• Do I get to drive my car on the track ? Track access is by invitation only. The track at Woody Creek  is a 1.1 mile road course that simply cannot handle a large group. You will however, be able to hang at the track with six figure exotics, and see, hear and smell these cars lap. To work at 3ZERO3 Motorsports is not to be employed, but rather to be part of a family. We were all thankful to be the guests of Technician Tucker and his wonderful wife Megan. They took all of us in for a night filled with delectable cuisine, and hand crafted libations ( nay : food and beverage !). It is very hard to get all of the 3ZERO3 family in the same place at the same time, but when we do, it always makes for a memorable evening.

STAYING BUSY

Despite the dawdling US economy, our parking is constantly brimming with Audi’s, Porsches and Volkswagens. We are happy and grateful to be so busy. Thankfully Technician ‘Kiwi’ Andrews has made a full recovery from his shoulder surgery and is back swinging wrenches just in the nick of time.

We missed this guy ! Technician Keith ‘Kiwi’ Andrews returns after some scheduled maintenance. The shop just wasn’t the same without our resident New Zealander !

SUPERCHARGED GLORY

February was officially supercharger month at 3ZERO3 Motorsports. In the span of a few weeks we added  4 PES G4 supercharger units to an Audi RS4, an Audi S6 Avant, and 2 Audi S4’s. The addition of forced induction on each of these platforms has vaulted all of these fantastic 8 cylinder, all wheel drive sports cars into the realm of true super cars. Dropping the clutch of these heavy hitting Audi V8’s  while hearing the supercharger whine  AND boiling all 4 tires from a dead stop is truly addictive.

3ZERO3 Motorsports has made a name for itself as the premier supercharged tuner for  not only Colorado, but in all of North America. Have questions about how to make your naturally aspirated Audi S4, S6, A6, A8, Q7, Touareg, or RS4 go faster ? We have the answers !

DYNO TIME

With at least 8 different dyno session scheduled for all of the supercharged Audi V8 cars alone , we spent alot of time on the dyno. Not to mention the great success we had with Tom Seabrook’s STG 3 Audi S4. Dyno testing revealed that his car was missing a significant amount of power. Replacing his injectors, and updating his ECM with a new custom tune yielded BIG power increases.

Dave Elkan’s supercharged B6 S4 Avant laying down nearly 100whp improvement over stock. When you consider the fact that naturally aspirated engines lose 3% of power per 1,000ft of elevation gain, you can really appreciate how much faster Dave’s S4 is in his hometown of Snowmass CO.

NEW FRIENDS

With the onset of the new year, we have found ourselves awash with new contacts, new customers, and new friends. People like Euro Berge Magazine and Photographer Ronnie Renaldi have been hanging around the shop lately presenting new and exciting opportunities for 3ZERO3 Motorsports customers and enthusiasts across Colorado !

Looking forward to future collaborations with Richard Melick and the Euro Berge team.

Marty Lowandowski’s has dropped his A6 2.7T to street sweeper status. Marty is a hard working active local enthusiast, we are lucky to help maintain his gorgeous Audi.

NEW CARS

Modified B8 Audi A4’s are becoming more and more frequent visitors to 3ZERO3 Motorsports. James Huzella’s murdered out 2.0TFSI is a prime example.

Tradeshow Emporium owner Willis Wood recently picked up this modified B6 A4 1.8T Avant for pennies on the dollar.  His car representing a great example of the value in the used car market.

NEW PROJECTS

Now this is a project we love . Brian & Allison Thenhaus’ 1982 Porsche 911 SC is getting brought back to life courtesy of 3ZERO3 Motorsports air cooled Porsche specialist Randy Muller. Focusing first on the mechanical items, followed by body work and interior, stay tuned for progress updates on this modern classic.

GETTING THOSE PORSCHES READY FOR SUMMER

We have been busy lately getting our Porsche customers’ vehicles ready for summer. Track prep, and motor rebuilds have been the name of the game for father and son racing team Mike and Sean Thul. But not all Porsches take the winter off. Vail resident Rys Olsen ROCKS his 997 Carrera 4S all year long.

The Porsche 951 cars are becoming more and more popular amongst track junkies in Colorado. With a rear mounted transaxle, 50/50 weight distribution, Porsche genes, and low entry cost, you’d be crazy not to love these cars.

EVENTS

The winter season doesn’t present too many opportunities to get out there and put our cars to the test. Except for ice racing of course. We had a blast tearing up the frozen surfaces of Georgetown Lake this winter. Next week marks the beginning of Supercharger week 2010. But before we begin tearing into the heart of 2 Audi S4’s, an Audi S6 Avant, and THE Audi RS4, we are first dyno testing all 4 vehicles to establish baseline performance figures.

Want to learn more about what a dyno is and how it operates ? Click along with 3ZERO3 Motorsports as we put Matthew Collins’ venerable RS4 on a Superflow 4 wheel dynamometer one fine afternoon in Denver, Colorado.

WHAT IS A DYNAMOMETER ?

A dynamometer or ‘dyno’ for short, is a device for measuring force, moment of force (torque), or power. For example, the power produced by an engine, motor or other rotating prime mover can be calculated by simultaneously measuring torque and rotational speed (rpm).

In addition to being used to determine the torque or power characteristics of a machine under test (MUT), dynamometers are employed in a number of other roles. In standard emissions testing cycles such as those defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), dynamometers are used to provide simulated road loading of either the engine (using an engine dynamometer) or full powertrain (using a chassis dynamometer).

CHASSIS DYNAMOMETERS

A chassis dynamometer measures power delivered to the surface of the “drive roller” by the drive wheels. The vehicle is often parked on the roller or rollers, which the car then turns and the output is measured.  Today we were using a Superflow 4 wheel Chassis Dynamometer to measure the horsepower and torque of Matt’s Audi RS4.

SECURING THE CHASSIS

The vehicle is secured to the test equipment by means of high strength winch straps. The vehicle’s wheels and tires are centered over each of the two steel drums, at which point the winch straps are tightened down. Securing the vehicle chassis is of the upmost importance. While the vehicle will be stationary the wheels will be spinning at over 125mph ! You can only imagine what would happen if the vehicle came off the dyno!

We secured Matt’s RS4 around the load bearing suspension lower control arms in each corner of the vehicle.

WHY DYNO TEST ?

Audi, Porsche and VW performance enthusiasts are all power crazy. Power numbers saturate their minds like wrangler denim at a stock show. You can take the stock horsepower and torque figures provided by vehicle manufacturers, couple that with your performance modifications and come up with an idea of what kind of power your vehicle is making.

These power numbers amongst performance enthusiasts can become *ahem* slightly exaggerated, especially when being discussed in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Those serious about understanding, and enhancing the performance envelope don’t guess or exaggerate, they dyno test to know what their vehicle’s capabilities.

Next week 3ZERO3 Motorsports will be adding a PES Supercharger to Matt’s Audi RS4. The supercharger kit will help Matt’s formerly naturally aspirated V8 engine overcome atmospheric losses here in Denver, Colorado. However to properly evaluate the real results of this supercharger kit, we need to understand how much power the RS4 is making now.  So we strapped her down to a 4 wheel dyno to find out.

POWER  AT THE WHEELS

Chassis dynamometers do not measure engine horsepower, they measure power at the wheels. It is estimated that most all wheel drive Audi vehicles lose 22% of engine horsepower thru their driveline. This number can confound enthusiasts, but it does require energy to spin axles, differentials, wheels and tires.

AND THEN ?

Matt’s car had a fresh tank of 91 octane fuel, was wearing her prettiest shoes ( 20″ HRE with a custom brushed aluminum finish to match the exterior trim ) REVO stage I software, and full Milltek performance exhaust system. We did 3 pulls on the vehicle in 3rd gear, starting at 2750RPM and accelerating at full throttle all the way to the engine’s red line.

Audi claims that the RS4 made 420HP and 317 FT-LBS of torque at the engine’s crankshaft, at sea level. With the addition of the software and exhaust we estimated that Matt’s vehicle was making approximately 450HP and 350FT-LBS TQ at the engine at sea level. (It is estimated that naturally aspirated engines lose 3% of engine horsepower per 1000ft of elevation gain )

On its third and final pull of the afternoon the Audi RS4 made :

• 281.1 HP
• 256.5 FT-LBS TQ

Factoring in atmospheric, and driveline losses, these numbers seemed within arms reach of our estimated RS4 engine power.

With the addition of the PES supercharger next week we cannot wait to get back on the dyno and see what the RS4 can do.
