We are proud to announce that after 6 purposeful years of serving the the needs of local VW, Audi, and Porsche owners we are moving (up in the world). As of September 26th 2011, we will be inhabiting a new space.

5000 Robb St, near I-70 and Kipling will not be a place where our dreams are born, rather it will be a place where our dreams take flight.

For us, the significance of the move is profound. This marks for us, a considerable step towards becoming the type of shop we have all dream about. In this new space we will be better equipped to service the needs of every VW, Audi and Porsche owner.

DIRECTIONS TO THE NEW SHOP :

Off Kipling St in Wheat Ridge, find 49th Ave AKA the North side (I-70) frontage road.

Take 49th Ave West, past Medved Chevy and past the ever curious Antique Mall.

Then you will see Robb St. Turn right here and at the top of the hill you will see our building on your right.

Not to worry, the new standalone 16,000 SQ FT facility has plenty of parking,

Although at one point we said the same thing about the last building

From supporting unmolested locally driven VW’s, Audi’s and Porsche’s of all varieties…..

……..to executing concept builds for customers 3,000 miles away……..

……..to assisting racers courageously competing in their first year of motorsports……

……….to supporting track cars whose engines measure in hours not miles,

We believe that everyone will appreciate the resources that the new shop affords us.

MAIN WORKSHOP :

Why “the main workshop” ?

The layout of the new building allows us the opportunity to define a primary workspace, as well as dedicated spaces for the alignment rack, and inspired specialty project area.

WAITING ROOM & RECEPTION :

Staying on trend with an increasingly productive customer base, the new waiting room is more than couches, television, and magazines. There are now multiple dedicated work stations where you can work while watching us work.

CONFERENCE ROOM :

If you need to take a meeting with the team the conference room accommodates all-comers.

ALIGNMENT RACK

When you have a state of the industry alignment rack like we do, you give this piece of specialized equipment room to breathe. Our ALIGNMENT RACK will receive a zero clearance installation allowing even the lowest of lowered vehicles to be driven straight on.

PARTS DEPARTMENT > A PARTS ROOM

Most shops have a “parts guy”, well we have a parts department. Our factory trained parts manager is complemented by ambitious co-workers supporting not only the shop on a local level, but also working to supply parts to enthusiasts globally via the: 3ZERO3 MOTORSPORTS ONLINE STORE.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR : At the bottom of this page there will be a secret section that we are calling the “2011 3ZERO3 Tactical Guide to Interpersonal Communications for the Successful Leisure Operations Planner“ Consider these strategic ground rules, and they will reward you in spades.

(Regular Blog Readers don’t worry! We promise that we are not giving away your secrets! We typed this portion of the blog in a special blog font that is invisible to anyone not subscribed to this blog. Impossible you say, just share this with a new reader and see !).

———————————————————————————-

Before we just dive right into the actual events & details, we will bother you with 2 questions first.

1) How do you organize your time?

Microsoft Outlook ?

Smart Phone ?

iPhone ?

Old School paper Calendar ?

Or are one of those cerebral types who keeps it all in their head ?

2) Follow up question; is that calendar in front of you right now ?

No, why not ?????

It’s ok don’t feel bad. We’ll wait while you do that……..

In the meantime watch this video shot from inside the 3ZERO3 Audi S4 from last summer while your calendar opens.

———————————————————————————-

SUMMER EVENT SCHEDULE PHILOSOPHY

Don’t talk about it. Be about it.

3ZERO3 Motorsports is more than just a shop. We want to be the reason you want to own a Audi, VW, or Porsche. In doing so it is important for us to not only support the local Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche scene, but also CREATE the local scene.

You need to find out. Hear it now and believe it later but Denver is home to a fantastic racetrack. One that needs to be used and supported, lest it goes away. We haven’t always had High Plains Raceway, but we do now. And we make a point to go, and bring you with us.

From April to September we participate in a scheduled open lapping day event at High Plains Raceway. This is an affordable, organized event that is open to the public. Which means that you will be grouped according to speed and talent and get to drive on the track.

These track events are in no way limited to Porsche’s, Audi’s or Volkswagens. Last year we ran with Dodge Viper, an Aston Martin, an Acura NSX, and a Chrylser 300C on 22″ chrome wheels. Everyone can participate !

This is a great and cost effective way to get the speed demon out of your system, improve your driving prowess, and see some really cool cars at the same time. But it’s on a Friday. So take the day off ASAP !

A man walks in thru the doors at 3ZERO3 Motorsports, carrying with him quart sized bottles of what he claimed was liquid gold. “Liquid gold you say ? Well I’ll be……”. Scott and Max then listened dubiously for a spell while the heavy handed sales pitch continued on. As soon as they were given pause, Scott & Max began a line of questioning that ought to be described as extensive, awkward, or otherwise excessive. Motivated and clearly bothered by our bombastic interrogation, the sales pitch was nevertheless sustained. Scott and Max knew that their skeptical approach was at best aggressive, but what happened later that day, no one expected ! Intrigued? Entertained? Keep reading……

What follows in this blog is the tale of how liquid gold has made it into our race cars, our personal cars, and our mothers cars. If you don’t care about brake fluid you should stop reading this blog immediately ( but hey, thanks for stopping by). However, for the rest of you this might just be worth your time.

SO WHAT HAPPENED NEXT ?

Ok so the intro to this blog might have been overly dramatized. But trust us, this reads better than what actually happened…. Long story short, we love Prospeed RS683, and if you can understand the beauty that lives within these little black bottles, you too will love Prospeed RS683, promise.

First things first check out this video testimonial from our most dedicated track rat last season, then we will proceed to fill your brain with science, one eloquently explained concept at a time.

IN ENGLISH PLEASE :

With a dry boiling point of 683 °F Prospeed RS683 has:

The highest dry boiling point of any performance or racing brake fluid available.

BOOM.

COMPRESSIBILITY

In addition to its ridiculously high boiling point, Prospeed RS683 has the arguably ( we argue) the best pedal feel of any high performance brake fluid. The name of the game here is compressibility. Or for Prospeed RS683, the lack there of. And this fact is the by-product of some hardcore fluid engineering.

RS683 VS SILICONE BASED FLUIDS.

Most manufacturers use the same tricks to achieve the same results. That means that in addition to lofty boiling points, high performance fluid manufacturers need their brake fluid to resist absorbing water.

To achieve both goals some fluid engineers enlist the help of good old Dimethyl Polysiloxane. Seems like a good idea right ? You need to ensure that your brake fluid is free of water, why wouldn’t you use Dimethyl Polysiloxane, right ? WRONG !

Dimethyl Polysiloxane, YOU’RE GOING DOWN !

While we try not to use the blog as an opportunity to throw polymeric organosilicon compounds under the bus, however in this case Dimethyl Polysiloxane, really had it coming. Step into the arena of air solubility, and prepare to get worked!

DORKY JARGON:

Dimethyl Polysiloxane exhibits air soluibility.

Air solubility does awful things to pedal feel.

More specifically:

“Air Solubility – It has been reported that Dimethyl Polysiloxane fluid, which is a major part of silicone based low water tolerant type brake fluids can typically contain dissolved air at a level of 16%±3% by volume at standard temperature and pressure. This compares with a typical level of 5%±2% by volume of dissolved air for glycol ether based type fluids. An increase in brake pedal travel may be experienced under severe operating conditions, especially at higher altitudes and high temperature conditions.” -SAE J1705, Appendix A, A.2.2.8

Translation : silicon based high temp, water resistant so called high performance brake fluid, suffer what can be described as a compressible pedal. Prospeed RS683 brake fluid uses Polyalkylene Glycol Ether which is 3 times less compressible than silicone type fluids, even when heated.

RESULT : Prospeed RS683 will contribute to a more positive pedal feel.

Rock on Polyalkylene Glycol, Rock on.

——————————————————————————————————————————————–

FROM THE LAB TO SHOP.

And then we started putting RS683 in our cars. All our cars.

Our 2010 World Challenge GTI.

Supercharged and naturally aspirated Audi RS4’s both wearing Stasis Motorsport suspension and R compound rubber.

Porsche 911’s, and Caymans prepped for World Challenge, Porsche Club racing, and street use.

A grab bag of cars that will never see anything more decorated than daily driving action.

OUR RESULTS :

We felt that the performance benefit was immediate and significant, with the dedicated track cars showing the biggest benefits.

The change to RS683 meant that our brake fluid was for all intents and purposes, had become a reinforced link in our chain of braking.

The brake fluid in our cars could now better handle abuse, and extreme temperature. As braking performance increases, so does heat. And as a result we no longer had a mushy pedal holding impeding confidence and performance.

Ultimately we found that in most cases the improvement in fluid surpassed the performance of major hardware. Meaning that the fluid could handle the heat but pads and rotors were getting too hot. And further development and upgrades to brake hardware and brake cooling yielded notable improvements in lap time, feel, and all around badassness.

Last summer we watched as Geoff Thomas went from 2:15 + lap times, to nearly making the 2:00 club at High Plains Raceway. Most cars that lap that fast weigh half as much as Geoff’s RS4.

——————————————————————————————————————————————–

BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

On November 30 2010, Andretti Autosport announced that Prospeed would be their technical supplier. This based primarily upon the performance of the RS683 Fluid.

Andretti Autosport is owned and operated by Michael Andretti. Andretti competed for 19 years in the CART championship before moving to the IndyCar Series in 2003 and proceeding to win 3 championships in his first 5 seasons.

Danica along with Andretti team mates Marco Andretti, and Ryan Hunter Reay are all in the hunt for the Indycar points race. The team is currently occupying 10th, 8th, and 7th places respectively.

——————————————————————————————————————————————–

Passion, training, technology, performance. yeah we’re into that…..Or as our nerdy Marketing Director would say, “we embody those brand values”. Well, so do the good folks at HPA Motorsports. While HPA may have been around longer than us ( alot longer actually ) we both proudly operate 10,000 sq ft + facilities ( ours is 14,000 sq ft, but who’s counting?) filled with 5 full sized hoists, and access to a all wheel drive Superflow dyno ( ok so we don’t own the dyno we use BUT we do have a new alignment rack ). It only took a few trips down from Surrey Canada ( we don’t know where Surrey is yet) for Marcel Horn and company, to take a look at our operation and knight us as the FIRST American Certified HPA Dealer // Installer. We truly sealed the deal earlier this summer with our HPA Turbo install on Bud Gidday’s Audi TT 3.2 DSG. Take a stroll thru the blog for LOTS more info, news, history, jokes, run-on sentences (excessive use of parenthesis) and automotive witticisms (yes that’s a real word!).

Fast Facts about HPA Motorsports.

Since 1991 HPA Motorsports has set performance trends in the performance industry, raising the bar with every new project.

They are based in Surrey Canada. (We just googled Surrey and still have no idea WHERE this is exactly, but thankfully FedEx knows).

Specialties include forced induction tuning of the VW//Audi VR6 motor, Haldex 4-motion based AWD systems, and DSG tuning.

Their R&D team is continually developing custom solutions for unique in-house vehicle builds, and new items for over the counter consumers, while the production team is turning out parts for worldwide distribution

We were more than excited (read : flattered) when HPA considered us their first American Dealer //Installer. What we like about HPA, we like about ourselves. Their passion, vision, and technical ability are pronounced and transparent. They even announced the news it to the world( read : forums) : HERE .

Haldex Differentials and DSG Gearboxes define the niche.

To date HPA has capitalized on somewhat of a niche segment of the VAG ( read : Volkswagen Audi Group) enthusiast market targeting vehicles with VR6 engines, Haldex differentials, and DSG gearboxes. These are vehicles largely absent from most Euro Tuner product line ups ( did we say EuroTuner ? We’ve just been saying the word EuroTuner alot lately, random).

Most traditional VAG tuners have long stayed away from the VR6 + All Wheel Drive chassis combination’s such as :

Audi A3 3.2 DSG Quattro

Audi TT 3.2 DSG Quattro

Volkswagen R32 Mk IV & MkV

Volkswagen Passat 4 Motion ( B6 chassis )

Volkswagen Tiguan

Not to mention such cars as : Audi S3 // Volkswagen New Beetle RSi // Lamborghini Aventador 700-4 //Bugatti Veyron.

The nature of the DSG and Haldex equipment represent a shift to a new and non-traditional technology. It stands to reason that the cutting edge technology lends itself to unique R&D processes. We were understandably wary at first, but at the end of the day we found that the HPA product speaks for itself.

We became believers when we installed their FT360 Kit on Bud’s Audi TT 3.2 DSG. Driving this car changed the way we came to understand the brilliantly dynamic reality of this technology. And that was these cars are very fast, and very fun in a new way no other Volkswagen or Audi has been.

In a nutshell, the Haldex center differential is an electronically controlled center differential that can think its way thru ‘the when’ and’ the how’ to engage the rear axle. DSG is like having two manual gearboxes side by side, controlled electronically by a control module that can shift faster than you can think. The development of both new technologies has opened the door for amazing and ridiculously sophisticated chassis tuning previously not even conceivable!

Before you can comprehend the depth of the genius behind the HPA product You must first understand the basic nature of this still new OEM technology.

Haldex Performance Controllers:

The benefits of the HPA Haldex Controller:

Redefines Torque Transfer

Proactive Power Distribution

More Aggressive Handling Characteristics

The sophisticated Haldex based all wheel drive system monitors throttle input, ABS wheel speed sensors, steering angle, etc to anticipate and distribute torque transfer from the engine to the driveline.

This upgrade:

Increases torque transmission at acceleration providing consistent performance with increased over-steer.

The torque-transmission is influenced by how fast you press the accelerator down. The Haldex system can transmit torque before the engine delivers torque. At greater speeds the torque will decrease enabling less over-steer and safer driving properties.

The advantages of this upgrade are it’s ability to predict the onset of torque. This upgrade takes into account the throttle position signal more so than the OEM software and therefore can proactively begin applying power to the RWD clutch packs before wheel spin begins. As power is increased, more power lock occurs in the RWD unit until full lock is achieved.

This is ideal for autocross, road racing, and street driving as well as enhancements to poor weather driving.Any questions about the true effectiveness of these claims can talk to the highly decorated R32 Auto-X competitors Mark and Connie Smith :

DSG / S-Tronic Performance Programming:

The DSG gearbox is an amazing bundle of technologies with over 50 patents protecting it. The mechanical and software details of this technology are on lockdown from even the dealerships who are not allowed to perform any service other than the basic maintenance. Unlike simple engine tuning which involves the use of one of many readily available programming interfaces to manipulate the spark and fuel of the engine map, tuning the DSG involves many more parameters and a secure understanding of how these react to various vehicle inputs.

HPA has not been dissuaded by these difficulties, rather their efforts and successes have been rewarded by Volkswagen and Audi on an International level. After realizing that their R&D, and engineering processes were perhaps their equal, VAG Royalty granted them the opportunity to :

Exclusively build the three RGT project cars (Jetta, Passat, and Touareg) for the debut at the 2005 SEMA show. All powered by a twin turbo and the Jetta and Passat outfitted with the DSG.

Met with the head software and mechanical developers for the DQ200, DQ250, and DQ500 DSG Gearboxes, and participated in ride and drives with the Audi A3 calibration team.

With years of multiple overlapping and compounding durability evaluations (including the 24 hours at Nurenburgring, and numerous FT565 vehicle builds), HPA has developed the software expertise necessary to ensure safe functionality of the DSG in extreme applications. With over two dozen different DSG gearboxes in North America (and several more globally), no tuner is better versed and more prepared than HPA is to overcome these variables to ensure a perfect result that won’t prematurely wear out clutch packs or threaten the gearbox.

———————————————————————————————————————-

HPA Forced Induction Systems

With power losses at altitude = 3% of engine power per 1,000ft of elevation, its just not fair. But life ain’t fair kid. Get forced induction !

Recently, everyone and their mother has been selling turbo and supercharger kits online. In our mind, any hardware we recommend or install has to meet our ridiculous ideas of performance, reliability, and value. Never accused of being the cheapest kits on the market the HPA turbo and supercharger kits define the concept of complete & thorough.

HPA Forced Induction engineering highlights :

Introduced in 2004, HPA’s FT series single turbos are recognized today as one of the most reliable systems on the market for the 3.2L VR6. Engineered in partnership with HGP using Garrett turbo technology and proprietary cast housings and manifolds.

Optimized turbine and compressor housings maximize the air flow while efficient ball bearing turbo cartridges offer superior throttle response and reduced turbo lag.

Nickel-iron alloy used in exhaust manifolds is specially formulated to offer the best balance between tensile strength and thermal efficiency.

The cast aluminum short runner intake manifold sustains higher boost levels than the factory plastic intake and maximizes the air intake to all six cylinders. Silicone boost plumbing directs the air charge through the intercoolers and into the intake manifold in as short a route possible while keeping it insulated from ambient heat.

Versatile Automotive Diagnostics

Stating that the modern automobile is technically complicated is like saying that the Arctic Ocean is cold. You can’t understand the pain that worlds coldest ocean can impart without diving in head first. If you have ever been stuck on the wrong side of a impossible diagnostic problem on a late model car, you can better understand the emotional metaphor here.

Thankfully, VAD a division of HPA applies their same saavy to the realm of diagnostic equipment, specializes in Volkswagen / Audi scan tool solutions for the consumer and professional environment.

VAD offers technicians exclusive access to the most current diagnostic data, for all vehicles in the Volkswagen Audi Group

Ranging from the earliest OBD cars to today’s most technically advanced models. From the most common Engine, Transmission, and ABS units, to the more specialized Tire Pressure Monitoring, Steering Angle Sensor, and Climate Control units.

There are no limitations to the amount of control modules accessible. After connecting to any of the available 100+ control modules, VAD can then give insight into more than 800 Individual values and 11,000 possible VW/Audi specific fault codes present in today’s vehicles.

———————————————————————————————————————-

By now, you should be not only ready to buy a Audi TT 3.2 or a Volkswagen R32 so you have a platform for which to install such amazing hardware. Well unfortunately, 3ZERO3 Motorsports does not sell vehicles. BUT you can repay our efforts to simultaneously inform and entertain you by purchasing a big turbo kit online RIGHT NOW !

Its ok to feel depressed and sad sometimes, lord knows there are plenty of reasons. The Bronco’s stink, your home isn’t worth what it should be, and yesterday (December 21st) marked the shortest day of the year. But these things too shall pass. In the words of some obscure French poet that no one has ever heard of :

“Sadness flies away on the wings of time” -Jean de La Fontaine.

Well here’s to erasing the sadness, and restoring your holiday cheer, with our 3rd and final installment of coverage from Day 3 of the First Annual Snowmass Automobili Exotica.

Enjoy !

BACK TO REALITY

Bright eyed and bushy tailed would not be the way I would have described the Automobili Exotica crew when day broke on Sunday July 25th. Rich food, loud music, and impressive libations had taken their toll on the gang.

But outside the hotel room door, the maids were knocking, inside the room alarms was going off, and the sun was up….. time to go home boys & girls.

The days events from Friday and Saturday had left us all feeling euphoric. The High Country, Lamborghini’s, Porsches, Boosted Audi’s, track time, parties, where were we exactly :

Snowmass?

Had we died and gone to Automotive Heaven ?

Or were we dreaming ?

Regardless of wherever we thought we were, we knew our time had come. Time to go home, back to work, back to reality, back to driving on the I-25 corridor, not Independence Pass, back to being surrounded by Camry’s not Murcielago’s.

So we packed our bags. Wished the hotel staff adieu, loaded our bags, donned our shades, and headed out.

SNIPE : Simpson women checking out.

Think gas in Denver is expensive ?

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

As soon as we rounded the first corner onto Independence Pass, all loathing had subsided. The adventure was real again, and we had our work cut out for us.

We were road warriors once more.

Stacy Berger, we don’t know how you do it. Watching Aaron slide ( expertly we might add) his S4 around the unguarded hairpin turns of Independence Pass makes us terrified from a distance, let alone imagining what the in car experience must be like. You Stacy Berger, are a champion !

With these chilly 60F degree days and ( false ) promises of snowfall driving us to huddle indoors, and dream of warmer weather. Here’s something that will light your fire. Long overdue coverage of one of the hottest days from the 2010 Track season. September 17, the creative team from EuroBerge Magazine joined 3ZERO3 Motorsports for some very artistic coverage of a amazing day at High Plains Raceway, ENJOY !

Now usually when you are reading a High Plains Raceway Blog, you are hearing us constantly hammer you with reasons why you need to to join the 3ZERO3 Motorsports team for a day at the track. Reasons like :

You have the full support of the Factory Trained 3ZERO3 Technical team on hand, should your car need any attention.

You have access to professional driving instruction.

You will be lapping all day with people just like yourself ! Scared, overconfident, under-confident, and the like.

You will be able to get out and DRIVE your car the way the manufacturer, give in to the little devil on your shoulder encouraging to go fast, FAST, FAST !

But in this particular instance, we won’t be reminding you of any of those facts .

Instead, we are focused on displaying the art, and perspective of the EuroBege photographers.

Paul Quaisers gorgeous Imola S4 Avant.

Wheel pretty.

What is EuroBerge ?

EuroBerge Magazine was started in 2008 by Richard Melick and Micheal Selander with the idea of creating an online newsletter that would cover the mutliple car clubs in Colorado that gear towards European motoring. With the help of a great group of friends, Richard and Mike were able to take this idea and produce the very first issue of EuroBerge, a 10 page spread of photos and articles covering just a few little events. Since then, we as a group have pushed each other, be it in layout and design to article writing, to set a standard of over 60 pages of publication being produced every quarter.

The premise behind EuroBerge is that it be free to the enthusiasts no matter what, and to be free of any advertising, which we feel clutters up the pages and distracts from the content. With this idea in mind, they push each other to ensure the content we bring to you, the enthusiast, is of good value, and not something you could find in another magazine. Due to the local emphasis of the magazine, we’re able to deliver a publication that honestly reflects readers can relate to the Colorado enthusiast can relate to: European cars and Colorado.

Eric Deherrera’s GT28RS powered Audi TT learns a lesson in hyper agressive throttle inputs mid-corner. When you are running 30PSI manifold pressure, best to just roll on the throttle when you are in the middle of a down hill kink. Well thankfully for Eric, the only painful part of this lesson was cleaning the 32LBS of dirt and debris from inside his otherwise immaculate interior.

It seems like only yesterday we were staring at a bone-stock, certified pre-owned VW GTI on the Emich showroom floor. Staring at the car wondering, if we could do it. Our resources were finite, but our passion and enthusiasm for success knew no bounds. In the end we did it. We took a street car, and turned it into the fastest Touring Car to Lap at Mosport International Raceway this season, and we did it all in 27 days. We took a freshly assembled racing team, and proved to the rest of the world, (and perhaps to ourselves) that we weren’t just as good as we thought, we were in fact better. In our first season of competition in the World Challenge Touring Car class, we finished 4th in points, but to us it feels like we won it all.

Mosport International Raceway : Set track record for Fastest Lap in a World Challenge Touring car.

We were thrilled when Pirelli invited us to represent the front wheel drive test vehicle at High Plains Raceway ( our home track!).
At the end of the season, we were lucky enough to be the guests of Fred Emich, and his team at Emich Volkswagen for a Tech Session with the GTI. However, the tech session was more than merely geeking out about cool VW racecar technology, it was a great evening of celebration.

Besides uncovering some of the fantastic race inspired technology inherent in this particular Volkswagen product, the relationship between Emich VW ( a dealer ) and 3ZERO3 Motorsports ( an independent ) highlights the fact that these two businesses can have a symbiotic relationship. Its great to see that the leadership at Emich is so supportive of the VW performance brand values. It highlights why their progressive business model is so successful, because they support the brand values closest to the enthusiasts hearts & minds.

Even the venerable Kurt Hansen of Race Central was on hand for the celebration.
