5000 Robb St,  near I-70 and Kipling will not be a place where our dreams are born, rather it will be a place where our dreams take flight.

The layout of the new building allows us the opportunity to define a primary workspace, as well as dedicated spaces for the alignment rack, and inspired specialty project area.

When you have a state of the industry alignment rack like we do, you give this piece of specialized equipment room to breathe. Our ALIGNMENT RACK will receive a zero clearance installation allowing even the lowest of lowered vehicles to be driven straight on.

TRACK DAYS @ HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY

If you don’t know. You need to find out. Hear it now and believe it later but Denver is home to a fantastic racetrack. One that needs to be used and supported, lest it goes away. We haven’t always had High Plains Raceway, but we do now. And we make a point to go, and bring you with us.

From April to September we participate in a scheduled open lapping day event at High Plains Raceway. This is an affordable, organized   event that is open to the public. Which means that you will be grouped according to speed and talent and get to drive on the track.

These track events are in no way limited to Porsche’s, Audi’s or Volkswagens. Last year we ran with  Dodge Viper, an Aston Martin, an Acura NSX, and a Chrylser 300C on 22″ chrome wheels. Everyone can participate !

This is a great and cost effective way to get the speed demon out of your system, improve your driving prowess, and see some really cool cars at the same time. But it’s on a Friday. So take the day off ASAP !

Our  affection for Audis Porsches and VW’s isn’t just about motorsports. We dig mesh wheels, air suspension, custom trim work,  Mk1’s, Mk2’s, and stuff that we didn’t know existed. And its out there, we’ve seen it and we’re going back for more in 2011.

WORLD CHALLENGE RACE SCHEDULE 2011

Just like the the major manufacturers for whose brands we support ( That’s you Porsche, Volkswagen, and Audi), we believe that racing informs our concept of safety, reliability, and performance.

• Track Days : these are gonna be tough. This will require a day off of work for most of you. Don’t ask for yet another day off. Perhaps suggest you take a courteous furlough day  away from the office. Thus unburdening your employer from having to write you a check for that day
  

• Tire Kicking Events : for those of you that the recession has left out in the cold. Remember that this isn’t screwing around with cars, this is ( ahem) networking with some elite Denver socialites.

• Snowmass Automobili Exotica: on the surface, a 3 day car weekend to someone that sees your automotive obsession as a bad thing could be an uphill battle. But here’s a few bullets for you: This event is eminently affordable! Tell me you can spend 2 nights in Snowmass, have more fun, and spend less money ( thought so!).  With amazing scenery, car shows, track time, fun people, great food and drinks, this is guaranteed to be a summer highlight. Just ask anyone who attended last year !
  

• Car Shows: now most of the summers car shows will fall on a Sunday. This is the day where most of us need to be doing launry, grocery shopping and the like. How could we possibly take away from those precious weekly tasks ? Get em done early, or ( more realistically) hire a personal assistant // nanny // au pair to do your dirty work !

As soon as they were given pause, Scott & Max  began a line of questioning that ought to be described as extensive, awkward, or otherwise excessive. Motivated and clearly bothered by our bombastic interrogation, the sales pitch was nevertheless sustained. Scott and Max knew that their skeptical approach was at best aggressive, but what happened later that day, no one expected ! Intrigued?  Entertained? Keep reading……

SO WHAT HAPPENED NEXT ?

Ok so the intro to this blog might have been overly dramatized. But trust us, this  reads better than what actually happened…. Long story short, we love Prospeed RS683, and if you can understand the beauty that lives within these little black bottles, you too will love Prospeed RS683, promise.

IN ENGLISH PLEASE :

With a dry boiling point of 683 °F Prospeed RS683 has:

• The highest dry boiling point of any performance or racing brake fluid available.
  
• BOOM.

COMPRESSIBILITY

In addition to its ridiculously high boiling point, Prospeed RS683 has the arguably ( we argue) the best pedal feel of any high performance brake fluid.  The name of the game here is compressibility. Or for Prospeed RS683, the lack there of. And this fact is the by-product of some hardcore fluid engineering.

RS683 VS SILICONE BASED FLUIDS.

Most  manufacturers use the same tricks to achieve the same results. That means that in addition to lofty boiling points, high performance fluid manufacturers need their brake fluid to resist absorbing water.

To achieve both goals some fluid engineers enlist the help of good old Dimethyl Polysiloxane. Seems like a good idea right ? You need to ensure that your brake fluid is free of water, why wouldn’t you use Dimethyl Polysiloxane, right ? WRONG !

Dimethyl Polysiloxane, YOU’RE GOING DOWN !

While we try not to use the blog as an opportunity to throw polymeric organosilicon compounds under the bus, however in this case  Dimethyl Polysiloxane,  really had it coming.  Step into the arena of air solubility, and prepare to get worked!

DORKY JARGON:

Dimethyl Polysiloxane exhibits air soluibility.

Air solubility does awful things to pedal feel.

More specifically:

• “Air Solubility – It has been reported that Dimethyl Polysiloxane fluid, which is a major part of silicone based low water tolerant type brake fluids can typically contain dissolved air at a level of 16%±3% by volume at standard temperature and pressure. This compares with a typical level of 5%±2% by volume of dissolved air for glycol ether based type fluids. An increase in brake pedal travel may be experienced under severe operating conditions, especially at higher altitudes and high temperature conditions.” -SAE J1705, Appendix A, A.2.2.8

Translation : silicon based  high temp, water resistant so called high performance brake fluid, suffer what can be described as a compressible pedal. Prospeed RS683 brake fluid uses Polyalkylene Glycol Ether which is 3 times less compressible than silicone  type fluids, even when heated.

RESULT : Prospeed RS683 will contribute to a more positive pedal feel.

FROM THE LAB TO SHOP.

And then we started putting RS683 in our cars. All our cars.

• Our 2010 World Challenge GTI.
  
• Supercharged and naturally aspirated Audi RS4’s both wearing Stasis Motorsport suspension and R compound rubber.
• Porsche 911’s, and Caymans prepped for World Challenge, Porsche Club racing, and street use.
  
• A grab bag of cars that will never see anything more decorated than daily driving action.
  

OUR RESULTS :

We felt that the performance benefit was immediate and significant, with the dedicated track cars showing the biggest benefits.

The change to RS683 meant that our brake fluid was for all intents and purposes, had become a reinforced link in our chain of braking.

The brake fluid in our cars could now better handle abuse, and extreme temperature. As braking performance increases, so does heat.  And as a result we no longer had a mushy pedal holding impeding confidence and performance.

Ultimately we found that in most  cases the improvement in fluid surpassed the performance of  major hardware. Meaning that the fluid could handle the heat but pads and rotors were getting too hot. And further development and upgrades to brake hardware and brake cooling yielded notable improvements in lap time, feel, and all around  badassness.

Last summer we watched as Geoff Thomas went from 2:15 + lap times, to nearly making  the 2:00 club at High Plains Raceway. Most cars that lap that fast weigh half as much as Geoff’s  RS4.

On November 30 2010, Andretti Autosport announced that  Prospeed would be their technical supplier. This based primarily upon the performance of the RS683 Fluid.

Andretti Autosport is owned and operated by Michael Andretti. Andretti competed for 19 years in the CART championship before moving to the IndyCar Series in 2003 and proceeding to win  3 championships in his first 5 seasons.

• Won IndyCar Series championships in 2004 Tony Kanaan
• Won IndyCar Series championships in 2005 Dan Wheldon
  
• Won IndyCar Series championships in 2007 Dario Franchitti

While HPA may have been around longer than us ( alot longer actually ) we both proudly operate 10,000 sq ft + facilities ( ours is 14,000 sq ft, but who’s counting?) filled with 5 full sized hoists, and access to a all wheel drive Superflow dyno ( ok so we don’t own the dyno we use BUT we do have a new alignment rack ). It only took a few trips down from Surrey Canada ( we don’t know where Surrey is yet) for Marcel Horn and company, to take a look at our operation and knight us as the FIRST American Certified HPA Dealer // Installer. We truly sealed the deal earlier this summer with our HPA Turbo install on Bud Gidday’s Audi TT 3.2 DSG. Fast Facts about HPA Motorsports.

• Since 1991 HPA Motorsports has set performance trends in the performance industry, raising the bar with every new project.

Haldex Differentials and DSG Gearboxes define the niche.

To date HPA has capitalized on somewhat of a niche segment of the VAG ( read : Volkswagen Audi Group)  enthusiast market targeting vehicles with VR6 engines, Haldex differentials, and DSG gearboxes. These are vehicles largely absent from most Euro Tuner product line ups ( did we say EuroTuner ? We’ve just been saying the word EuroTuner alot lately, random).

Most traditional VAG tuners have long stayed away from the VR6 + All Wheel Drive  chassis combination’s  such as :

• Audi A3 3.2 DSG Quattro
• Audi TT 3.2 DSG Quattro
• Volkswagen R32 Mk IV & MkV
• Volkswagen Passat 4 Motion ( B6 chassis )
• Volkswagen Tiguan
• Not to mention such cars as : Audi S3 // Volkswagen New Beetle RSi // Lamborghini Aventador 700-4 //Bugatti Veyron.

The nature of the DSG and Haldex equipment represent a shift to a new and non-traditional technology. It stands to reason that the cutting edge technology lends itself to unique R&D processes. We were understandably wary at first, but at the end of the day we found that the HPA product speaks for itself.

We became believers when we installed their FT360 Kit on Bud’s Audi TT 3.2 DSG. Driving this car changed the way we came to understand  the brilliantly dynamic reality of this technology. And that was these cars are very fast, and very fun in a  new way no other Volkswagen or Audi has been.

In a nutshell, the Haldex center differential is an electronically controlled center differential that can think its way thru ‘the when’ and’ the how’ to engage the rear axle.  DSG is like having two manual gearboxes side by side, controlled electronically by a control module that can shift faster than you can think. The development of both new technologies has opened the door for amazing and ridiculously sophisticated chassis tuning previously not even conceivable!

Before you can comprehend the depth of the genius behind the HPA product You must first understand the basic nature of this still new OEM technology.

Haldex Performance Controllers:

The benefits of the HPA Haldex Controller:

• Redefines Torque Transfer
• Proactive Power Distribution
• More Aggressive Handling Characteristics

The sophisticated Haldex based all wheel drive system monitors throttle input, ABS wheel speed sensors, steering angle, etc to anticipate and distribute torque transfer from the engine to the driveline.

This upgrade:

• Increases torque transmission at acceleration providing consistent performance with increased over-steer.
• The torque-transmission is influenced by how fast you press the accelerator down. The Haldex system can transmit torque before the engine delivers torque. At greater speeds the torque will decrease enabling less over-steer and safer driving properties.

The advantages of this upgrade are it’s ability to predict the onset of torque. This upgrade takes into account the throttle position signal more so than the OEM software and therefore can proactively begin applying power to the RWD clutch packs before wheel spin begins. As power is increased, more power lock occurs in the RWD unit until full lock is achieved.

DSG / S-Tronic Performance Programming:

The DSG gearbox is an amazing bundle of technologies with over 50 patents protecting it. The mechanical and software details of this technology are on lockdown from even the dealerships who are not allowed to perform any service other than the basic maintenance. Unlike simple engine tuning which involves the use of one of many readily available programming interfaces to manipulate the spark and fuel of the engine map, tuning the DSG involves many more parameters and a secure understanding of how these react to various vehicle inputs.

HPA has not been dissuaded by these difficulties, rather their efforts and successes have been rewarded by Volkswagen and Audi on an International level. After realizing that their R&D, and engineering processes were perhaps their equal, VAG  Royalty granted them the opportunity to :

• Exclusively build the three RGT project cars (Jetta, Passat, and Touareg) for the debut at the 2005 SEMA show. All powered by a twin turbo and the Jetta and Passat outfitted with the DSG.
• Met with the head software and mechanical developers for the DQ200, DQ250, and DQ500 DSG Gearboxes, and participated in ride and drives with the Audi A3 calibration team.

With years of multiple overlapping and compounding durability evaluations (including the 24 hours at Nurenburgring, and numerous FT565 vehicle builds), HPA has developed the software expertise necessary to ensure safe functionality of the DSG in extreme applications. With over two dozen different DSG gearboxes in North America (and several more globally), no tuner is better versed and more prepared than HPA is to overcome these variables to ensure a perfect result that won’t prematurely wear out clutch packs or threaten the gearbox.

• The cast aluminum short runner intake manifold sustains higher boost levels than the factory plastic intake and maximizes the air intake to all six cylinders. Silicone boost plumbing directs the air charge through the intercoolers and into the intake manifold in as short a route possible while keeping it insulated from ambient heat.

Well here’s to erasing the sadness, and restoring your holiday cheer, with our 3rd and final installment of coverage from Day 3 of the First Annual Snowmass Automobili Exotica.

BACK TO REALITY

Bright eyed and bushy tailed would not be the way I would have described the Automobili Exotica crew when day broke on Sunday July 25th. Rich food, loud music, and impressive libations had taken their toll on the gang.

But outside the hotel room door, the maids were knocking, inside the room  alarms was going off, and the sun was up….. time to go home boys & girls.

The days events from Friday and Saturday had left us all feeling euphoric. The High Country, Lamborghini’s, Porsches, Boosted  Audi’s, track time, parties, where were we exactly :

• Snowmass?

• Had we died and gone to Automotive Heaven ?

• Or were we dreaming ?

Regardless of wherever we thought we were, we knew our time had come. Time to go home, back to work, back to reality, back to driving on the I-25 corridor, not Independence Pass, back to being surrounded by Camry’s not Murcielago’s.

So we packed our bags. Wished the hotel staff adieu, loaded our bags, donned our shades, and headed out.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

As soon as we rounded the first corner onto Independence Pass, all loathing had subsided. The adventure was real again, and we had our work cut out for us.

We were road warriors once more.

Stacy Berger, we don’t know how you do it. Watching Aaron slide ( expertly we might add) his S4 around the unguarded hairpin turns of Independence Pass makes us terrified from a distance, let alone imagining what the in car experience must be like. You Stacy Berger, are a champion !

CAUTION : OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THEY MAY APPEAR

The Italians, the RS4 and R8 crowd had made a very early departure on Sunday morning. Leaving a more compact, and brand unified run group back to Denver.

Charlie Collings always knows how to get in-front of the camera. And we love him for it.

Open roads and sunny skies, neither lasted for  long.

Aaron followed Charlie’s lead, and allowed for some great shots to be taken of his S4 as we rolled thru the Foothills.

What is EuroBerge ?

EuroBerge Magazine was started in 2008 by Richard Melick and Micheal Selander with the idea of creating an online newsletter that would cover the mutliple car clubs in Colorado that gear towards European motoring.  With the help of a great group of friends, Richard and Mike were able to take this idea and produce the very first issue of EuroBerge, a 10 page spread of photos and articles covering just a few little events.  Since then, we as a group have pushed each other, be it in layout and design to article writing, to set a standard of over 60 pages of publication being produced every quarter.

The premise behind EuroBerge is that it be free to the enthusiasts no matter what, and to be free of any advertising, which we feel clutters up the pages and distracts from the content.  With this idea in mind, they push each other to ensure the content we bring to you, the enthusiast, is of good value, and not something you could find in another magazine.  Due to the local emphasis of the magazine, we’re able to deliver a publication that honestly reflects readers can relate to the Colorado enthusiast can relate to: European cars and Colorado.

Kudos to a man making his dreams come to life, a feat rarely achieved in a depressed economy. Go get em Willis !

Eric Deherrera’s GT28RS powered Audi TT learns a lesson in hyper agressive throttle inputs mid-corner. When you are running  30PSI manifold pressure, best to just  roll on the throttle when you are in the middle of a down hill kink. Well thankfully for Eric, the only painful part of this lesson was cleaning the 32LBS of dirt and debris from inside his otherwise immaculate interior.

TIRE TESTING AT HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY

We were thrilled when Pirelli invited us to represent the front wheel drive test vehicle at High Plains Raceway ( our home track!). I mean who wouldn’t love to do this ? A cold, crisp fall day, wide open race track, Italian Tire Engineers and the opportunity to destroy  free tires ! Opps did we say ‘destroy’, we meant engage in  at the limit tire testing on a wide open race track.

We shaved 5 seconds off our lap times with the improved traction of the Pirelli Tires. Pretty amazing.

EMICH TECH SESSION

At the end of the season, we were lucky enough to be the guests of Fred Emich, and his team at Emich Volkswagen for a Tech Session with the GTI. However, the tech session was more than merely geeking out about cool VW racecar technology, it was a great evening of celebration.

Besides uncovering some of the fantastic race inspired technology inherent in this particular Volkswagen product, the relationship between Emich VW ( a dealer ) and 3ZERO3 Motorsports ( an independent  ) highlights the fact that these two businesses can have a symbiotic relationship. Its great to see that the leadership at Emich is so supportive of the VW performance brand values. It highlights why their progressive business model is so successful, because they support the brand values closest to the enthusiasts hearts & minds.

I don’t care what he says. Robb looks best in Nomex.
