CASE STUDY : Tom Seabrook’s Audi S4 2.7T

Audi enthusiast and Silver Plume, CO resident Tom Seabrook called us this winter. Tom had recently purchased a used Audi S4 2.7T. This Imola Yellow sport sedan had one previous owner, who had receipts for a full stage 3 conversion, but Tom had his doubts. ” It should be faster,” Tom quipped. After one test drive, we were similarly convinced. It should be faster.

We scheduled some time for Tom to leave his S4 with us, and we investigated further…….

The dyno sheet for the baseline run. Power numbers are low, and A/F is not where it needed to be. HP numbers are in BLUE, torque in RED, and Air/Fuel in GREEN.

294.8WHP and 347.8 WTQ aren’t bad, but could be so much better !

We received Tom’s car. And performed a full inspection :

• Ensured there were no boost/vacuum leaks.
• Confirmed that engine, brakes, and driveline all had sufficient fluids.
• Made sure all electrical systems were functioning properly.

After we ensured the car was safe, and ready for the dyno, we took the car off to our friends at Carz Performance to lay down some baseline numbers. And what we found was that our concerns were validated. Tom’s made good numbers, but not good enough.

Lucas and the guys at Carz Performance are not Audi, VW, or Porsche specialists per se. While they do spend quite a bit of time tuning Mitsubishi Evo’s, we feel they are dyno specialists. We have the upmost respect, and confidence in their ability, and  their equipment. Our relationship with them is built upon years of positive experiences. Any owner should share this confidence in whomever is testing their vehicle.

Looking more closely at Tom’s baseline dyno graph we found that Tom’s fuel injectors were maxed out after 4,800 RPM. His software program was limiting boost and timing, and ultimately performance. Time for some changes.

We quickly uprooted out the 440cc fuel injectors, installed some 630cc units,and  dropped mainline fuel pressure by installing a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator. A phone call and some digital magic procured a new file for Tom’s car to maximize the additional fuel provided by the new injectors.  Thats it, 6 fuel injectors, 1 new fuel pressure regulator, and a new file.

At 3ZERO3 Motorsports, we have access to tuning options from many vendors, such as :

• Autospeed Performance
• PES
• VAST Performance

Depending on your specific needs and goals, we will work with the best vendor to suit your needs. For Tom’s car, we added a VAST Performance file.

Now time for logging. After the new hardware was installed, we drove the car while monitoring and recording vital engine electronic sensor information. This information is organized in data logs, and then emailed to our software specialists who will tune these files. Making changes to boost pressure onset, fuel management, ignition timing etc, to ensure that the car is operating properly, and at full potential.

These revised files are downloaded onto our computers, and then uploaded to the engine control module.

Now we’re talkin’ turkey !

That’s more like it !

In this instance the results were astounding.Tom’s car picked up 46.7 WHP and 55,6 WTQ, with only updated fueling items and a much improved tune.  Much of Tom’s increased performance is attributed to having larger and properly functioning fuel injectors, as well as an updated software file. Will your car see these same benefits ? Maybe, maybe not, you don’t know til you know…..

The real moral of the story is this :

• Is your car performing the way it was designed to ? The only way to know is by putting your car on the dyno and finding out !
• How ridiculously expensive is this ? There is no menu pricing for custom tuning. Every car is different and has unique needs, But to get going, a full inspection and baseline dyno session will always cost less than $200.0. After that pricing is largely dependent on the specific hardware, and software updates your car will require.
• Why not tune on the dyno ? We aren’t necessarily opposed. But our customers drive their vehicles on the open road, that is where we perform our logs, and make revisions to ensure it is this environment where the car will perform. We don’t build dyno queens, we make real cars, real fast, for the real world.

SUPERCHARGERED GUYS VS TURBOCHARGED GUYS…….

Sit 4 different automotive enthusiasts down at the same table, and you will undoubtedly have 4 divergent + dogmatic approaches to attaining high performance nirvana.

Modified turbocharged Audi’a have long been the main stay in the contemporary tuning scene. With 1.8T and 2.7T owners dominating the performance market, naturally aspirated V8 owners remained crestfallen that their only tuning options were relegated to suspension, exhaust and the like.

While turbo upgrades are effective, efficient, and energetic, there is a bit of a been-there, done-that mentality amongst the tuner crowd. Open the pages of Eurotuner or European Car magazines and you have be doing some very special to your 1.8T or 2.7T to grace the pages of either of those prominent publications. K04 and GT28RS upgrades just aren’t cutting the mustard any more.

ITS NOW TIME FOR THE V8 CARS TO SHINE

From their roots in 5 cylinder turbo engines up thru the development of the 1.8T and 2.7T engines familiar to the Volkswagen and Audi families, enthusiasts had easy access to engine tuning. Software upgrades liberated inexpensive  horsepower from within the ECM. And turbo upgrades provided even more power for these platforms.

However with the introduction of the naturally aspirated 4.2L V8 into the B6 Audi S4, owners were left in wont. Suspension, exhaust, and braking upgrades were some of the only available avenues for those in need of high(er) performance.  That is until very recently……

FACTORY TRAINED

Ever spent time under the hood of a late model german vehicle ? There is alot going on inside these hyper-modern vehicles.

The proliferation of new technology, and proprietary  electronic equipment has made manufacture specific training a must for the contemporary technician. At 3ZERO3 Motorsports, factory training and certification are mandatory prerequisites for everyone of our technicians.

Want to learn more about what a dyno is and how it operates ? Click along with 3ZERO3 Motorsports as we put Matthew Collins’ venerable RS4 on a Superflow 4 wheel dynamometer one fine afternoon in Denver, Colorado.

WHAT IS A DYNAMOMETER ?

A dynamometer or ‘dyno’ for short, is a device for measuring force, moment of force (torque), or power. For example, the power produced by an engine, motor or other rotating prime mover can be calculated by simultaneously measuring torque and rotational speed (rpm).

In addition to being used to determine the torque or power characteristics of a machine under test (MUT), dynamometers are employed in a number of other roles. In standard emissions testing cycles such as those defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), dynamometers are used to provide simulated road loading of either the engine (using an engine dynamometer) or full powertrain (using a chassis dynamometer).

CHASSIS DYNAMOMETERS

A chassis dynamometer measures power delivered to the surface of the “drive roller” by the drive wheels. The vehicle is often parked on the roller or rollers, which the car then turns and the output is measured.  Today we were using a Superflow 4 wheel Chassis Dynamometer to measure the horsepower and torque of Matt’s Audi RS4.

SECURING THE CHASSIS

The vehicle is secured to the test equipment by means of high strength winch straps. The vehicle’s wheels and tires are centered over each of the two steel drums, at which point the winch straps are tightened down. Securing the vehicle chassis is of the upmost importance. While the vehicle will be stationary the wheels will be spinning at over 125mph ! You can only imagine what would happen if the vehicle came off the dyno!

We secured Matt’s RS4 around the load bearing suspension lower control arms in each corner of the vehicle.

WHY DYNO TEST ?

Audi, Porsche and VW performance enthusiasts are all power crazy. Power numbers saturate their minds like wrangler denim at a stock show. You can take the stock horsepower and torque figures provided by vehicle manufacturers, couple that with your performance modifications and come up with an idea of what kind of power your vehicle is making.

These power numbers amongst performance enthusiasts can become *ahem* slightly exaggerated, especially when being discussed in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Those serious about understanding, and enhancing the performance envelope don’t guess or exaggerate, they dyno test to know what their vehicle’s capabilities.

Next week 3ZERO3 Motorsports will be adding a PES Supercharger to Matt’s Audi RS4. The supercharger kit will help Matt’s formerly naturally aspirated V8 engine overcome atmospheric losses here in Denver, Colorado. However to properly evaluate the real results of this supercharger kit, we need to understand how much power the RS4 is making now.  So we strapped her down to a 4 wheel dyno to find out.

POWER  AT THE WHEELS

Chassis dynamometers do not measure engine horsepower, they measure power at the wheels. It is estimated that most all wheel drive Audi vehicles lose 22% of engine horsepower thru their driveline. This number can confound enthusiasts, but it does require energy to spin axles, differentials, wheels and tires.

AND THEN ?

Matt’s car had a fresh tank of 91 octane fuel, was wearing her prettiest shoes ( 20″ HRE with a custom brushed aluminum finish to match the exterior trim ) REVO stage I software, and full Milltek performance exhaust system. We did 3 pulls on the vehicle in 3rd gear, starting at 2750RPM and accelerating at full throttle all the way to the engine’s red line.

Audi claims that the RS4 made 420HP and 317 FT-LBS of torque at the engine’s crankshaft, at sea level. With the addition of the software and exhaust we estimated that Matt’s vehicle was making approximately 450HP and 350FT-LBS TQ at the engine at sea level. (It is estimated that naturally aspirated engines lose 3% of engine horsepower per 1000ft of elevation gain )

On its third and final pull of the afternoon the Audi RS4 made :

• 281.1 HP
• 256.5 FT-LBS TQ

Factoring in atmospheric, and driveline losses, these numbers seemed within arms reach of our estimated RS4 engine power.

With the addition of the PES supercharger next week we cannot wait to get back on the dyno and see what the RS4 can do.

To say that Willis is savvy consumer, as well as an dedicated enthusiast is an understatement. Willis is the proud owner of an Audi 200 Turbo Quattro, a BMW M Coupe, and now an Audi A4 1.8T Avant. Willis wanted an A4 Avant that he could take 4 people + 4 snowboards to Summit county in speed and style.

Needless to say Willis has an impressive lineup in his garage. Willis attributes this mainly to the value in buying quality used vehicles.

“I honestly don’t think I will ever buy a new car again. The value just isn’t there. I have been buying used cars for the last 7 years confidently, with the help of 3ZERO3 Motorsports. Thankfully, their technicians have talked me out of bad cars, and into good ones. The Audi B6 A4 1.8T (seen here) was located online from a seller  in Arizona. The seller had performed a healthy amount of performance modifications, but  in recent history had neglected to maintain and repair the car properly. This is fairly typical of the used car market. At some point vehicle owners tend to understand that they will be selling their cars in the near future. As soon as that happens, they lose almost all financial incentive to continue proper vehicle maintenance and repair.

BUT WAIT ! As long as the vehicle does not fall into a terminal state of disrepair, their negligence is your gain !

Upon receiving Willis’ A4, we put the vehicle thru our rigorous ‘Marshall-Law’ vehicle inspection. An inspection so stringent that no fluid leak, loose suspension, or fault code will escape undocumented.

As Technician Marshall inspected the vehicle he found a whole host of concerns not previously disclosed by the previous owner. While Willis purchased the used Audi at an extremely competitive price, these detailed notes on the required repairs gave Willis the tools to go back to the seller, and negotiate an additional settlement.

” I knew the A4 was going to need some work, I really didn’t know quite how much. 3ZERO3 made buying the car easy. I had the car shipped directly from AZ to their shop. They coordinated the shipping of the vehicle, took delivery, and even gave me the (contractual ) option to refuse delivery and get a full refund if I was unhappy with the vehicle. He ( Technician Marshall )  found that the car needed more work than what had been disclosed to me, but they gave me the tools and guidance to work that out with the seller. They performed the work in a week, and now I have an amazing machine,”.-W.Wood

With its high definition digital imaging technology, and high end components, 3ZERO3 Motorsports Technicians can ensure a laser perfect 4 wheel alignment every time.

Atop the tower are precision sensors that take high definition images for the heads that we place on your Volkswagen, Audi, or Porsche wheels.

State of the industry mounting equipment is safe even for custom wheels.

Here we see the target head mounted on a B7 Audi S4 Avant with RS4 wheels featuring a custom finish. The hardware we employ is safe for these, and all wheels. The equipment mounted to each wheel is referred to as the target head. The target head is precisely calibrated when mounted, and sends high definition information to Hawkeye system.

On the display monitor each alignment angle is clearly displayed. Every vehicle has different specifications and adjustments. Our Hunter system features the latest WinAlign 11 software which displays factory adjustments for all Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche vehicles.

When each adjustment turns green, our technicians know they are getting close to that perfect adjustment angle.
